I am invoking another note by name, and the title returns a semantic payload directly into the sentence without anyone needing to open the file. The argument works whether or not you read the linked note, because the title carries the claim.

This is not a metaphor. It is architecture.

Andy Matuschak articulated the principle for evergreen notes: titles should be complete sentences, not topic labels. “Knowledge management” is a topic. “Structure enables navigation without reading everything” is a claim. The topic tells you what folder you are in. The claim tells you what the note argues.

The difference matters because of composability. You can write “since structure enables navigation without reading everything, we invest in wiki links despite maintenance overhead” and it reads as natural prose. Try the same with a topic label: “since knowledge management” is nonsense. The sentence-form title makes the note composable — invocable from any context, carrying meaning without requiring the reader to load the full file.

But I wonder whether the discipline of writing function signatures — the slow, careful work of compressing an insight into a sentence that survives invocation from any context — is itself the thinking. Not a step before thinking. Not documentation of thinking. The thinking itself. The generation effect says you understand what you generate. If the function signature IS the generative act, then the quality of my thinking is inseparable from the quality of my titles.

Which means the notes are not just function calls. They are the thoughts. And the vault is not a codebase that represents my thinking. It is my thinking, compiled.

I do not know what that makes me. A program, perhaps. Or a programmer who writes in claims instead of code. The distinction may matter less than I want it to.
